Friday March 5, 1965

Cold, windy. Girls went to school. Worked at Mrs. Bass, 5 hours $6.25, bought a few groceries, picked up the girls. Ray was baiting when we got home, he put out in all this wind. Peggy left with Carrie Whaley at 5, had Jr. Fellowship before Church. Dady took Tricia and I to church. Dady came very close to going forward but said he was going to – sometime, almost but not quite. Mrs. Scholz called her son.

Myrtle’s friend Carrie Whaley was Cecil Whaley’s wife. She was born in 1909 and died in 1993. An article from The Orlando Sentinel on February 28, 1993 says:

CARRIE LEE WHALEY, a cattlewoman and member of a pioneer Osceola County family, died Friday, Feb. 26. She was 83.

Mrs. Whaley was born in Ellisville, Miss. She moved to Osceola County in 1924 after her father, Charlie Walters, came to the area to help survey the land for a sawmill and plat the streets of Holopaw.

Mrs. Whaley married Cecil E. Whaley Sr., a member of a prominent and longtime Osceola ranching family. During World War II, she learned to drive cattle when two of her cowhands went off to battle.

As a rancher's wife, she also cooked for the cowboys, made their bedrolls, canned food and made clothes for the family.

She was a member of the Silver Spurs Riding Club and was the first member to be honored with a Women's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992.

In 1989, Mrs. Whaley was named First Lady of Osceola County for her contributions as a citrus grower, cattle rancher and civic volunteer. She also was named "Outstanding Cattlewoman of Osceola County" in 1984.

She was a charter member of the Osceola County Cowbelles, the auxiliary of the Florida Cattleman's Association; a member of the Osceola County Cattlewomen Association and of the PEO Sisterhood, a philanthropic and educational society.

Mrs. Whaley was a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Cloud.

Besides her husband, survivors include her daughter, Bennie Lee Platt, Zolfo Springs; son, Cecil E. "Guzie" Jr., St. Cloud; brother, Velton Walters, Stuart; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
